Library Line--The Big Read Continues...

by Cary Knapp

The Big Read: To Kill a Mockingbird may be winding down but there are still several activities you can participate in that pertain to the book. This Tuesday, 7:00 p.m., at the Brunswick Library, the writer CoCo Harris presents an interactive book discussion exploring literary concepts of the novel, as well as the film adaptation of Harper Lee’s classic book. Attendees will participate in short creative writing exercises and engage in discussions of the characters, themes, setting, and overall literary landscape of the Pulitzer Prize winning work. Dubbing herself a lifetime diarist, CoCo has taught the art and craft of creative journal writing and personal narrative to individuals, organizations, and colleges by way of her creative journal writing workshops since 1999. She has been a contributing writer and columnist for various magazines and has authored several creative journaling guidebooks for her memoir projects. She is the founder of Telling Our Stories Press specializing in producing and publishing personal narratives of various literary forms. CoCo is a Zora Neal Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation Writer's Week alumna. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Writing in Fiction from Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky. Her works in progress include various nonfiction and fiction projects, including memoir collections, a short story collection, a novel, and a set of nonfiction anthologies. And, on Thursday, 7:00 p.m., at the Ritz Theatre in Brunswick, the To Kill a Mockingbird film series wraps up with the 1957 classic, “The View from Pompey’s Head.”

Also coming up this week, on Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. at the St. Simons Island Casino, see the 1999 American film, “The Simple Life of Noah Dearborn,” starring Sidney Poitier. On Friday, 7:00 p.m. at the Brunswick Library, hear the musician Leo Dean. “Parrotheads” will love this guy! A singer, songwriter, and storyteller, who has played all over the country, he knows hundreds of Jimmy Buffett songs, but he throws in other tunes as well.

All of these programs are free and open to all.

Don’t miss this month’s art display in the library’s lobby. Brunswick artist Cheri Robbins presents her lovely paintings in her show “Then and Now – From Maine to Georgia.”
