Library Line for Saturday, March 21, 2009

SPOTLIGHT ON: Upcoming programs…

It’s a busy week at the library with several fascinating programs…
On Tuesday, at 7:00 p.m. at the Brunswick Library, learn about Gothic New England: Hawthorne and the Puritan Legacy” when Faye Ringel visits. A recently retired Professor of English in the Department of Humanities at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Dr. Ringel will discuss how the legacy of Puritan guilt shapes Hawthorne’s best-known novels, The Scarlet Letter and The House of Seven Gables, along with Young Goodman Brown and the posthumous-published romance, Dr. Grimshawe’s Secret. After Hawthorne, this darker side of New England history and concern with secret sin, death, and immortality can be seen in authors as diverse as Emily Dickinson, Thornton Wilder, and Stephen King.

On Thursday, at 2:00 p.m. at the Brunswick Library and again at 7:00 p.m. at the St. Simons Public Library (in room 108 of the Casino complex), you can take a journey to a watershed moment in time and discover what it was like to live in another era. Through a multimedia format combining live performance and archival film footage, the story of Anne Frank comes alive in “Through The Eyes of a Friend.” Witness the pain, loss, and hope of young people during the Holocaust in a moving program that’s a poignant portrait of friendship and survival. “Through The Eyes of a Friend” is told from the view point of a fictional “best friend” of Anne Frank. Sarah Weis is a composite character inspired by the experiences and testimonies of many individuals who knew Anne Frank at certain points in her life as well as those young people who experienced the Holocaust throughout Europe. Don’t miss this nationally recognized one-woman play, which will be introduced by Holocaust survivor Dr. Eugene Schoenfeld, author and Professor Emeritus and former Chair of the Sociology Department at Georgia State University

A Reminder…On Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. at the St. Simons Island Casino Theater, see the 2006 documentary, “The Rape of Europa,” a film about the Nazi theft and destruction of European art and architecture.

These library programs are FREE and open to all.

Library Line--The Big Read Continues...

by Cary Knapp

The Big Read: To Kill a Mockingbird may be winding down but there are still several activities you can participate in that pertain to the book. This Tuesday, 7:00 p.m., at the Brunswick Library, the writer CoCo Harris presents an interactive book discussion exploring literary concepts of the novel, as well as the film adaptation of Harper Lee’s classic book. Attendees will participate in short creative writing exercises and engage in discussions of the characters, themes, setting, and overall literary landscape of the Pulitzer Prize winning work. Dubbing herself a lifetime diarist, CoCo has taught the art and craft of creative journal writing and personal narrative to individuals, organizations, and colleges by way of her creative journal writing workshops since 1999. She has been a contributing writer and columnist for various magazines and has authored several creative journaling guidebooks for her memoir projects. She is the founder of Telling Our Stories Press specializing in producing and publishing personal narratives of various literary forms. CoCo is a Zora Neal Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation Writer's Week alumna. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Writing in Fiction from Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky. Her works in progress include various nonfiction and fiction projects, including memoir collections, a short story collection, a novel, and a set of nonfiction anthologies. And, on Thursday, 7:00 p.m., at the Ritz Theatre in Brunswick, the To Kill a Mockingbird film series wraps up with the 1957 classic, “The View from Pompey’s Head.”

Also coming up this week, on Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. at the St. Simons Island Casino, see the 1999 American film, “The Simple Life of Noah Dearborn,” starring Sidney Poitier. On Friday, 7:00 p.m. at the Brunswick Library, hear the musician Leo Dean. “Parrotheads” will love this guy! A singer, songwriter, and storyteller, who has played all over the country, he knows hundreds of Jimmy Buffett songs, but he throws in other tunes as well.

All of these programs are free and open to all.

Don’t miss this month’s art display in the library’s lobby. Brunswick artist Cheri Robbins presents her lovely paintings in her show “Then and Now – From Maine to Georgia.”

You Are Invited!

The Friends of the Brunswick - Glynn County Library would like to invite you to the 22nd annual Tables of Content Benefit Dinner to be held at the King and Prince Golf and Beach Resort on February 18, 2009. The reception begins at 6:00 pm and the dinner at 7:00 pm.

Cost is $85.00.

This year's guest speaker is author, television and stage actor, and playwright Ron McLarty.

To make reservations please contact Cary Knapp at 912-267-1212 or Bonnie Thompson at 912-634-6148.

A native of East Providence, Rhode Island, McLarty is a veteran actor, accomplished playwright, prolific audiobook narrator, and acclaimed novelist. As a television actor, Ron McLarty has over 100 appearances to his credit. He has been a series regular on Spenser For Hire, Champs & Cop Rock in addition to the recurring role of Judge Wright on Law & Order. His most recent appearances include Sex & The City, The Practice, Judging Amy and Law & Order: SVU as well as playing Fred Trump, Sr. in Donald Trump: Unauthorized.

For as long as he can remember, however, he’s also been writing fiction, for five hours every morning, and in 2003 he published his first book thanks to the author Stephen King. As one of the country’s leading audio book narrators, Ron persuaded Recorded Books into produc-ing his novel, The Memory of Running, directly onto tape as an audiobook. It is believed to be the first recorded audiobook of an unpublished novel. Stephen King listened to it and wrote his entire column in Entertainment Weekly about Memory calling it “the best book you can’t read.” This lead to the publication of The Memory of Running in the USA and fourteen other countries around the world. Newsweek called it “...an exhilarating ride,” and it was nominated for Italy’s prestigious Bancarella Prize.

In January 2007 his second novel, Traveler, was published to critical and popular acclaim, with the Boston Globe saying it had “...a great voice, a great plot, great suspence, a great evocation of time and place.”

Ron’s third novel, Art in America, was published in July of 2008. It received a starred review in Booklist and has been chosen as a Pick of the Month in the August edition of bookviews.com by its editor, Alan Caruba, who says, “This is one of those novels where you find yourself laughing at the wonderful dialogue and crazy situations. McLarty has written two previous well-received novels and this one will surely be as well.” Booklist calls it a “bighearted, wildly entertaining novel from a writer who just gets better with every outing.”

Ron received from Rhode Island College in Providence an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities (2007) and the Charles B. Willard Achievement Award (2005). He lives in New York City with his wife, the actress Kate Skinner.

(And just how did the FRIENDS get Ron McLarty? He was at the top of a list of authors recommended by David Baldacci, the last TOC speaker. In the two decade history of the TOC, we’ve never had an actor turned author, so 2009’s event should be one of our best!)
